Groups Taking Action Now:

Common ground is a community-based organization that formed post Katrina that provides medical/health providers, aid workers, community organizers, legal representatives, journalists, and builders, among others. They work both long and short term along the gulf coast through volunteer work. They have raised 40,000,000 dollars  in estimated value of volunteer labor contributed.

Critical resistance is an organization that is working for a reduction of policing and imprisonment as a reaction to social, economic and political issues. They are fighting for amnesty for all of those arrested in the time following Katrina.

the deep south center for environmental justice focuses on the "Development of minority leadership in the areas of environmental, social, and economic justice along the Mississippi River Chemical Corridor and Gulf Coast Region."

Mississippi Workers’ Center for Human Rights is a worker advocacy group that provides organizing and legal assistance for low wage and non union workers. They also manage the southern relief fund for hurricane Katrina victims. ​
